A variation on previous threads, but what three songs and albums would go into a time capsule to showcase the duo at their very best. . .not personal favourites. . .just objectively the best work they ever did.

For me -

2)RAINY DAYS AND MONDAYS
3)A SONG FOR YOU

ALBUMS 1)CLOSE TO YOU
2)A SONG FOR YOU
3)CHRISTMAS PORTRAIT

Time Capsule to showcase the duo at their very best......
Singles: We've Only Just Begun,Yesterday Once More, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.
Albums: Close To You, Horizon, Christmas Portrait.

Not that this was an easy selection.

Singles: "For All We Know," "Rainy Days and Mondays," and "Superstar"
Albums: Close To You, A Song For You, Christmas Portrait

This is under the assumption that that all 6 items (3 albums and 3 singles) would go in the time capsule. This way I have covered their breakthrough album (Close To You), their best album (A Song For You) and their timeless masterpiece (Christmas Portrait) as well as the three smash hits from the Carpenters album. And if by "singles" we are referring to the original 45s, we would also have a highlight from Offering/Ticket To Ride, "Don't Be Afraid" (b-side of "For All We Know"), and arguably Richard's best lead vocal, "Saturday" (b-side of "Rainy Days and Mondays").

Given the "3 of each" parameters (and avoiding hits compilations), I think this is best combination to highlight their best work.

Answering this without reading anyone else's (yet) on purpose....

1) We've Only Just Begun
2) Yesterday Once More
3) Merry Christmas Darling

Had a hard time picking between Superstar and the first two - as I feel this record truly captured their heart and soul from the early years... But for time capsule purposes, I went with Begun, since it became the wedding anthem for a generation, and Yesterday Once More, since it bests represents Richard & John's writing. But - dang - this was a toughy...

Albums:

1) Carpenters (That gets my favorite earlier record, For All We Know & Superstar!)
2) Horizon (That gets my favorite song of their later years, Only Yesterday)
3) Christmas Portrait

I am assuming compilations like The Single's 1969-1973 wouldn't be allowed...? if so - I'd replace Carpenters.

ALBUMS

1) The Singles 1969-1973 (This collection of their greatest period must come first)
2) A Song For You (Their best album)
3) Close To You (Their breakthrough album)

SONGS

1) "We've Only Just Begun" (Their signature song)
2) "Goodbye To Love" (The prototype for the Power Ballad)
3) "Superstar" (Karen Carpenter at her best)

Songs:

"Goodbye To Love" (melodic , powerful, groundbreaking)
"Close To You" (total classic)
"When It's Gone" (from "Made In America" - one of Karen's most heartfelt vocals - no backing vocals on this song, and none needed.)

Albums:

"A Song For You" (K & R hit their stride on this album)
"Horizon" (Underrated and polished)
"Yesterday Once More" (Side A is excellent "Carpenters" and I found the Side B oldies medley to be lots of fun)

I didn't pick a "greatest hits" because that was too easy....though probably most appropriate!

motownboy, I'm assuming that when you listed "Yesterday Once More", you were actually referring to NOW AND THEN.
