I just ordered the Japanese 2009 SHM-CD reissue of "Soft Samba" from Amazon.com Japan. I should have it by Friday.

SteveGB: You're into Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66, right? If not, you would probably enjoy their music as well, since you are a Latin music fan. :)

A search on Ebay turned up a surprising number of copies of the original vinyl LP, so I've just bought one for a few pounds. I'll treat myself to a CD version for Christmas perhaps. Very useful to know that alternate title though, so thanks for the info Harry.

Mike, you bet I'm into SM & Brasil '66! Ever since I found a UK copy of their first LP at a junk market some years ago. I still think the 'rainforest' cover photo of the group has to be one of the coolest images ever to grace an album cover. That whole latin sound to me is just the zenith of 60s musical sophistication, even though I'm sure many people still dismiss it as mere lounge music.

Steve, there are other artists on Verve that you may enjoy as well. Some have a similar Bossa Nova vibe, others are more like a relaxed style of Latin. A few off the top of my head that are pretty good:

Walter Wanderley: Rain Forest or Batucada
Astrud Gilberto/Walter Wanderley: A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness
Cal Tjader: Soul Burst or Soul Sauce
Antonio Carlos Jobim: The Composer of Desafinado Plays
Stan Getz/Charlie Byrd: Jazz Samba (the album that broke Bossa Nova to US audience)

The Antonio Carlos Jobim album Wave on A&M/CTi is fairly good, and the Tamba 4 We And The Sea is a bit more adventurous but also has some great "moody" songs as well.

If you're at all fond of Sinatra's music, the Sinatra/Jobim album is a winner, along with the first half (or first side, on LP) of Sinatra & Co. which features seven more tracks. There is a Concord release that collects all 20 of their songs together also.

My SHM-CD issue of "Soft Samba" arrived! It's in a paper mini-album gatefold replica of the original album (very nice). I gave it a spin and the title "Soft Samba" really descibes this album to a "T". It's very, very, soft (lullaby soft); "And I Love Her" is IMO the best song on the CD, but after I listen to it a few more times I may change my mind. It's not a bad CD but it ain't nothing like the Baja Marimba Band.

Mike, is the SHM-CD "gritty" sounding? If you listen to "And I Love Her" with a good set of headphones, do you hear a noise, particularly in the right channel? Listen at around the :23 second mark.

Harry, I'm at work now and the CD is at home. I'll listen with headphones tonight and report back.

Harry, I do here some noise that I don't think should be there, like to much reverb or something.

  9. On A&M in the classic Ochre label period, the standout version is by the Sandpipers with Spanish lyrics, and is on The Spanish Album in superb quality.
  10. Thanks for posting the YouTube clip of Gary McFarland. Just ordered the LP from a dealer friend. Look forward to hearing the rest of this one.

If anyone's interested, the Gary McFarland SOFT SAMBA disc will be available in a priced-down reissue on March 21, 2012 in Japan (the same day as the Baja reissues!). This is listed as an SHM-CD, for whatever that's worth.
