For those on Facebook, the Wrecking Crew FB page yesterday posted PDF files of the AFM contracts for Herb's "Lonely Bull" sessions from Oct. 29, 1962. Fascinating to see the session lineup for this historic recording date. Also recorded that day were "Acapulco 1922," "The Story of an Evergreen," and "Little White Lies." I've never heard of the latter two before.

The funniest thing to me was "Bob Ross, Copyist". Evidently before he started painting trees. :)

Fascinating... I love seeing contracts and backs of studio tape boxes like this. There are two contracts here, one from late '62 and one from early '63. The Lonely Bull was tracked on both these dates according to the contracts... is there an alternate version out there that we've never heard? I always thought the song was recorded in a garage, but evidently that's a myth.

I don't know much about the Kenjolairs. I don't have this single, but I have another one called "Such A Good Night For Dreaming" and I swear Herb's singing voice is in the mix on that one.

It's kind of amazing/irritating to read the comments on those Alpert related posts on the Wrecking Crew page and see how much misinformation there is out there in the world.

Ahhh. I was wondering why "Kapp Records" was on that contract. Makes total sense now. Thanks for the clarification!!

Typical fb crowd. That's why I avoid it.

"Happy little trees."
Alas, the trees of happiness were found elsewhere, not in Los Angeles.

The painter Bob Ross was not a music copyist. He was in the US Air Force up until 1979, where he retired as a Master Sergeant after 20 years of service (he enlisted in 1959) to try promoting his "wet-on-wet" painting technique, then launched his PBS series in 1983.

Same name but wrong person. Common name though. Hope the trees are still happy. :D

The Wrecking Crew movie site has links to PDFs of lots more AFM session contracts, including more TJB: http://www.wreckingcrewfilm.com/afmcontracts.php

Interesting to see the one for "Spanish Flea." I assume "John's Tune" is what was released as "Felicia." This is also the date that "And I Love Her" (from Lost Treasures) was recorded. Also interesting that the entire TJB touring group was part of the session.

It is very interesting indeed. Tonni Kalash's presence is also noted. Some here have suggested that he did not play on TJB sessions, and that Herb did all the trumpet parts.

Maybe he wasn't in the final mix. "DEF HITS" did credit Herb for all trumpets except for the "Casino Royale" extravaganza.

I think we theorized that Tonni was used in the studio for Herb to "play off" of, and then Herb replaced those tracks with his own horn. I can't remember if this ever came from Herb himself or if it was just a theory of ours.

I think it was a theory and then others "in the know" (like Carol Kaye IIRC) confirmed it. But I'm not convinced that all the TJB recordings contain "No Tonni."

What the TJB musicians have said themselves on some occasions is that the basic tracks were done quite quickly in a few takes and that Herb would work with the tracks afterwards adding his own trumpet and other stuff. That would indeed be a very normal way of producing a record. There are some exceptions, e.g. "What Now My Love" where Herb said he was never able to improve on the "live" trumpet part he played in the studio with the band and that accordingly was the take that was kept. The same thing goes for his vocals on "This Guy", that was only meant as a "guide vocal"for the musicians, but which he was told "not to touch".
