Under Construction!
A&M's Jazz Heritage... On CTI and Beyond!
(Contributed by Bill Gowdy)
Although A&M Records was not generally perceived by most as a "jazz" label, they showed from their inception a
commitment to the art form. From their partnership with the legendary Creed Taylor in the '60s through the
inception of the Horizon label in the '70s and notable recordings by jazz greats all the way up to
A&M's sale to Polygram in the '90s, one can see that many of the most respected artists of the last four decades
recorded for A&M.
In 1967 A&M scored what could only be considered a "jazz coup." Producer Creed Taylor, of Verve Records,
launched his own label and struck a production/manufacturing and distribution deal with Gil Friesen and Jerry
Moss of A&M Records. Taylor's respect in the field allowed him to lure key Verve artists with him in his
new endeavor, most notably Wes Montgomery. The New label was called "CTi Records" which (of course) stood
for "Creed Taylor Inc." Outstanding and often unique jazz recordings hailed from the CTi until 1970 when
Creed Taylor signed a distribution deal with CBS.
While a number of CTi records went unreleased in the transition (indeed, only one has been released in
the US of A in the last 30 years and another, only in Japan), A&M continued to release jazz-oriented records in
the SP3000 series, up to the laucnh of the Horizon label. In fact, the first Horizon Records was
assigned a number in the 3000 series prior to Horizon being assigned to the SP700 series... Part of what
makes this series so exciting is not just the name of the artist leading the title, but the stellar sidemen, many
of whom who later went on to greatness as soloists in their own right...
In 1983 and 84 A&M made a half-hearted attempt to re-release many of the recordings in the series under the name
"Audio Master Plus Series". This name was also applied to A&M's first CD releases, regardless of musical
category. While they remained faithful to the original SP numbers for the 1983/4 reissues, when selected
recordings from both CTi and Horizon were released on CD in 1988 they were unceremoniously
renumbered into a new 0800 series.
What follows below is a numerical listing of the SP3000 series as originally released. Re-release info
(including new numbers) is provided where known and applicable.

Rather than constantly rehash an "A&M Formula" sound, the musicians went into the studio and
"jammed" through this album. Alpert's hands-off approach to the production lets the improvised spirit take
over the reins, creating a spontaneous 12 tunes in about four hours. "We literally improvised as we went
along--using visual and musical communications between ourselves to let the tunes happen, breathe and
expand," Jolly states. "Then we edited down the four hours of tape, did a little overdubbing, and this album
is the result." In addition to the piano, Pete also plays a Wurlitzer Electric Piano, Accordion, Musette, Sano
Vox and Hammond Organ. Anyone who thinks of Pete Jolly only from his first two A&M albums may be
in for a rude awakening, but the more adventurous of us will enjoy this album. --Neil Rudish
